Hello All,

Most of you must have heard of this buzz "Digital Signature", but at the same time for many, it is still a mystery.

In todays world, where we are going online and doing e-business, we still find very small part of e-business community utilizing the benefits of digital signatures. Sometime I see people getting confused between digital certificate and digital signature.

Digital signature products currently offered by the companies are too complex to understand and costly as well.

There are some companies which provide electronic signature service (SAS model). But there isn't anyone who provides digital signature service. At least I haven't come across any such service (Let me know if anyone knows such service).

I would like to get the feedback about such a service (digital signature service). Wont it be a good idea if you get to sign, encrypt, decrypt or verify document without installing anything on your PC that to just by spending few bucks..!!!

If anybody needs more information about digital certificates or digital signatures please write to me. I would be glad to share my knowledge with you all.

Cheers!

Dear Laxmikant,
Digital Signature quite confusing in terms of layman's language. Hardly anybody knows about it.
I have been using this service called www.echosign.com and I find it quite easier , of course they charge , but that counts.
Try it out

Thanks

Dear Chirac,

Yes I know, people are yet not aware of the digital signatures. Let me clear the confusion between electronic signature and digital signature.

Electronic signature is nothing but just stamping your name with other necessary details on the document. This is what companies like Echosign, Docusign and Alfatrust do.

In contrast, Digital signature concept is bit complex, but worth. First pre-requesite for digital signature is digital certificate. You need to purchase a digital certificate from some authorized certification authority (CA)like Sify,TCS, Verisign etc. These CAs issue you certificate after verifying your identity (similar to what credit card companies do). Now once you have the certificate, you ready for the digital signature.

So one question everyone might be getting in their mind is what digital signatures provide on top of electronic signature?

Here are the benefits:

1) First and the most, in most of the countries digital signatures are legal, while electronic signatures are not(except US....Yes electronic signatures are legal in US!!! surprising !!!)

2) Data Integrity - After signing the document, if someone tampers with the data, signature verification fails! so you know data has been tampered with.

3) Non repudiation - Once both the parties sign the contract, later none of them can deny the action. In case of dispute you can always take help of the law.

4) Authentication - You can always authenticate the person who signed the document.

Digital signatures along with encryption can provide fool proof security and confidentiality to digital data over the wire which I am sure will be boon for secure e-Business.

Cheers!
